SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed

Mrs. Lemon presented me with a document of expectations and duties.   Tasks included completing the school emergency and fire drill plan, assist with entry and breakfast duties, attend all leadership meetings, support all teachers by “walk-throughs” two to four times daily, attend pre-kindergarten grade level meetings, support Friday Socials, use checklist for classrooms and bulletin boards, and meet with Mrs. Lemon at least once a week to reflect.

REFLECTION

After attending a week of professional development and not feeling like I had a defined role in the building, I was pleased to have more of an idea of what I would be doing at Tunbridge.  Will outlined his speech well and made it direct and relevant for the staff.

SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed

The meeting on 8/27/12 was to observe how the meetings are conducted.  The Leadership Team consistd of Lydia Lemon (principal), Sheila Adams (Director of Teaching and Learning), Vanessa Trees (Health and Fitness Coordinator), Meaghan Chow (First grade teacher) and me.  Most of the time a formal agenda was provided; there were a few exceptions where the meeting was less formal.   On 12/3/12, both Lydia and Sheila were not able to attend, so I facilitated the meeting and took smartpen notes to disseminate.
Area of Competence: 8, 14
REFLECTION

These meetings provided me with an enlightening moment.   I was slightly taken aback to see that the administrative team talks about the teachers how other teachers talk about students.  There is a constant dialogue of who is doing well, who needs more support, is something affecting this teachers performance?   I never stopped to think that the administration would have such candid conversations about the teachers and staff.

SUMMARY
and ELCC Element Addressed

Mrs. Lemon approached me because she thought that breakfast in the cafeteria could be more organized.   She requested that I observe and assist for a week and then determine how to make breakfast run more smoothly.   After the week of observation, I determined that I would adhere to the method of Tunbridge and create a “Looks Like, Sounds Like, Feels Like” poster to post in the cafeteria.   I sought input from the First Grade students and teachers; together we made the rough draft of the document.   I converted the draft into a computerized document and enlarged it.  During the second week of school as each class reviewed the expectations in all the spaces of the school, I facilitated the conversation between students in each and every class within the school while they were seated in the cafeteria.   The poster still hangs in the cafeteria for reference.   The presentation was modified for the self-contained special education students.   Because the students thrive better in a small environment, that class’ presentation was in their classroom.

Tunbridge has such a solid foundation as it pertains to student expectations.   It wasn’t difficult for me to observe the current practices during breakfast time and evaluate what needed to be changed to make it operate more smoothly.

SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed

Mrs. Stallings, technology teacher, sent an email to administration to request an informal meeting about additional support, curriculum questions, and other classroom issues.   Mrs. Lemon asked me to meet with this teacher citing that it would be a good way to establish rapport and gain some administrative experience.  I prepared an informal agenda and printed out the email to be sure to address all of the questions Mrs. Stallings posed in her email.
Area of Competence: 3, 6
REFLECTION

Before the meeting I reviewed some of the concerns that I didn’t have enough information about with Mrs. Adams.  I used my smartpen to record the meeting and be sure that the administrative team was able to review how I conducted myself as well as address the questions that I couldn’t answer for Mrs. Stallings.   I also checked back with Mrs. Stallings to see if she had implemented some of the suggestions and if all of her other questions received follow-up.

SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed

The Kindergarten and Pre-K teachers and para-professionals approached me with concerns about Mrs. Stallings, technology teacher.  I spoke with them at length to gain a more accurate picture of what was happening during that resource.   They were concerned that Mrs. Stallings wasn’t using the Path to PAX system in her room; students were spending more time being “talked at” versus getting time on the computer.   The teachers were also concerned that the activities weren’t developmentally appropriate.  I made it clear that I would be stopping into Media resource when Kindergarten and Pre-K students were there so I could observe, and we would go from there.
Area of Competence: 3, 6
REFLECTION

The teachers are seeing an increase in behaviors while attending Media.  Students who generally like computer time were refusing to line up to go to the resource or commenting that they don’t want to go.   This is something that has to be fixed!!

SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed

Mrs. Adams has some concerns about a 5th Grade teacher.  I was asked to go in to the classroom during math time to assist and informally observe.
A 1st grade teacher was out today, and the general protocol at Tunbridge when a teacher is out is to provide as much support as possible to the substitute in the room.  I went in and assisted several times throughout the day staying for 20-30 minutes at a time.
Area of Competence: 1, 8
REFLECTION

I think that it is great that there is a certain understating at TPCS when substitutes are in the building.   I think this is a great way to show the vision and mission of the school is ultimately student learning and a culture of support and caring.

Because there is such a range and level of abilities in this classroom, it is necessary to have two people in the room as much as possible.   It helps to ensure that there is enough instruction time and independent work time available for all students.

SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed
The focus for today was the resource classes who have teachers who are new to the school.   I was able to support Mr. Brown in Music with 1st grade, Mrs. Stallings in Media with 2nd grade and Ms. Stallings in dance with 3rd grade.  It seems like Path to PAX isn’t being fully implemented, and it is causing disruptions in learning.   There seems to be an overall behavior issue with the class although Path to PAX is being implemented successfully with a supplemental ticket system for good behavior.  After each class was released from resource class, I briefly talked with each teacher about what was working and what needs to be improved.

Area of Competence: 1, 8
REFLECTION

It is interesting to see that the 1st and 2nd grade students who conduct themselves well in the classroom are having a difficult time in Music and Media.   It seems like the 3rd grade class is immature and needs a lot of work as far as social behaviors after I spoke with Mrs. G.   Her students have issues in homeroom and all of the resource classes (even at recess!)

SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed
Today I checked in with Ms. Stallings, Dance teacher.  We discussed the concerns she has about behavior and conduct with some of the classes.  We also talked about things that were working well and not so well in the classrooms.   It came out in conversation that there is more issues when she is going to the back of the room to reset the music for preforming.  I asked her why the media player was in the back of the room.  She said that is how the previous dance teacher had the room set up.  I suggested that she try putting the medias player in the front to see if that makes a difference.
I also supported teachers in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades with questions about progress reports, feedback from walk-through’s, and comments about the students when a substitute is present.
Area of Competence: 1, 8
REFLECTION

When I checked in with Ms. Stallings later in the week, she said it made a world of difference to move the location of the media player.  She was very grateful for the suggestion.  As a new teacher it seems like there is the push to mirror what the previous teacher did.  I am glad Steph realized that it is ok to do something different.

I assisted again today in Ms. Embry’s room.  I spoke with Mrs. Rice, 5th Grade, to see how things were going in the room.  I also supported Ms. Harrison, 1st grade, with an emotional child who refused to participate in the lesson.  I stayed with Mrs. Harrison for “wordball,” snack and a spelling game.  I also assisted Mrs. Chow during independent reading time, choice time and with a student who got sick.

When teachers don’t have an extra pair of hands, many times student behavior has to be ignored (as long as it isn’t disturbing the class) until whole group instruction is done.  I am glad I can help the teachers continue with their day a little easier.

SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed
There was an informal meeting today to discuss the board meeting, the water pipe emergency and the SPLEEM cards.  At the board meeting, Will McKenna, Executive Director, mentioned that TPCS Middle School might be in jeopardy because of financial concerns.  He is working on a solution, but needed to inform the public.   We quickly talked about the safety and sanitary concerns as well as the damage from the water pipe bursting.   The ceiling tiles near the front office were waterlogged and crumbled to pieces; they need to be replaced as soon as possible!  SPLEEM Cards will be disbursed to the staff at the faculty meeting on 10/8/12 so they can be reviewed by Ms. Trees.  I will also present the emergency protocols flipbook at the meeting.

SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed
Today I assisted Mrs. Lemon in dealing with a stealing situation that involved TPCS students who attend after care.   The students were caught stealing snacks and supplies out of teachers classrooms and distributing them to other students in the after school program.  Ms. Maiuro (4th grade) stayed after last night to deal with the situation, and there were parents who were not pleased.   Mrs. Lemon spoke with all of the students, the after school director, the parents and the staff whose rooms were affected.
Area of Competence: 1, 3, 12
REFLECTION

It was great to see Mrs. Lemon in action.  She made sure to get all of the pieces of the incident to ensure there was a full picture.  She based the consequences for each student based on their level of involvement.  Even the students who knew where the snacks and materials were coming from but didn’t actually steal were reprimanded because the culture of the school is to “take care of school, space and others.”  That was violated when the students didn’t tell what was happening so they were given a day of after school detention.

TPCS’s status as a charter school gives a little more flexibility to the school; they are able to create different report cards than BCPSS.  This was done for Kindergarten and 1st grade.  The other grade levels use an addendum for the BCPSS report card that provides families with more specific details about student achievement and also includes a social behaviors section.

SUMMARY and ELCC Element Addressed
Mrs. Lemon, Mrs. Adams and I met informally to discuss a BTU email that was sent to the staff but not the administration by the building representative.  Mrs. Lemon has no intention of interfering with items being sent to the staff, but as the principal it is expected that the information at least be shared with her.  Mrs. Lemon has officially decided to retire at the end of the year, so the administration team needs to start working on a transition plan for leadership.  The hurricane may have impacted the effectiveness of the fundraiser.  I will begin tallying orders on Monday.
Area of Competence: 4, 7, 12

I think the BTU building representative should have to include the principal in the communications because it is ultimately the responsibility of the administration to answer questions from teachers and be sure a culture of communication is maintained.
